downtown Savannah

As soon as my eyes open it’s clear an open bar at our wrap party was not the smartest way to start the previous night.  I can barely remember the trolley ride to The Mansion in Historic Downtown Savannah when The Lady received an alias so we could sneak her into the party.  A couple hellos, a set of songs from the band and a few stiff Maker’s Mark later we’re stumbling with a group of thirty to an overcrowded bar called Circa where the patrons were older and I’d tend to say upscale and southern snooty.  We managed our way through the crowds and ordered a couple glasses of Riesling and Whiskey but the best part of the bar is the smoking alley out the side door. The crowd began to break up and we heard the Black Lips were playing at Jinx so we broke away from the production group and started on our own adventure. Music coming from Mercury Lounge veered us off course so we had some whiskey and danced to the blues. The lady can shake her hips and I love to spin her around the dance floor. I can’t remember the band’s name but when they took a break we decided to get back on course, but when we got outside the overwhelming smell of pizza hit me and since the wrap party didn’t have any food I needed a slice to start absorbing some of the alcohol so we hit up Sweet Melissa’s on the corner Congress.  The lady stayed outside dancing on street and I watched her through the window moving to her own music as I stuffed my face with a great pepperoni and black olive slice of New York style thin crust.  Firing on all cylinders we make our way down the street to Jinx where we are lucky to find some of our friends.  “To all my friends” is being shouted by everyone and the lights on the stage light up about 12:30 and that’s about the same time Lights went out for me.  Memories come and go after that but I know we bought a banana smoothie for our cab driver because as I run past the remains of our late night Krystal fast food feast I remember his smile just as I make it to the toilet and lose my dignity but over the sound of it all I can still hear The Lady tell me the rest of the night was great and that her favorite part of the bar was the bronze sculpture of a beautiful woman with a pig nose.

Flying Tomatoes

A Pink Cat looks at me as I pour a glass of 2008 Gewurztrzaminer from Columbia Winery. The Lady lays next to me in our bed in our common hotel room taking an On-Line Ethics test and I'm no help with that so I continue staring at the pink cat. The cat stares back but it's a dead bottle of 2008 Mosel Riesling and it no longer has any answers for me. We're in Savannah and I've been getting fat with Paula Dean, my new favorite TV Chef.  I haven't been to a restaurant with a kids meal, so I've kept that promise, but I haven't been to many restaurant's so it's been an easy promise to keep.  Corleone's Trattoria in downtown Savannah had good baked dishes and deserts and Jazz'd Tapas thought more was better so it's obvious they don't understand the concept but the food was decent and I go there again if it wasn't Monday and a live band was playing.  Hell's Oven from Mississippi Man plays in the background and I'm tried from filming 16 hours of over complicated dyneric reality programming but it's all good because I got to work with Shawn White and at lunch I saw him getting fat with Paula Dean also so I know it's cool to say she cool cuz Shawn said so.

Hotty Toddy, and the Oxford Square!

If you find yourself drunkly stumbling down the square in Oxford looking for a place to sober up; stop by Rooster's. The Tallahassee Fillet drawed me in along with the Jalapeño Cheese Grits. Much to my surprise the best part of the meal would be my own creation. Traveling around, trying new foods and flavors, and spreading the grits; is what I am about! My travel to Rooster's lead me to try a new spread. The new Spread is Jalapeño Cheese grits on Hush-puppies. WOW, is all my mouth could say after bitting into the fresh, hot, golf ball size hush-puppies covered with a layer of grits.
The next best part of the Rooster's experience is the roof top bar. Go to the back of the bar and climb the stairs, here you will find a swarm of collegiate kids jamming to live music, and smoking on the balcony. A word to the wise " Watch you balance around the edge of the banister." Here you can have some drinks with friends and make new ones. If you order a Jack with a splash of coke, you only get a splash.
A few doors down is a bar a don't remember the name to. If you walk in and see salt water fish swimming behind the bar; your in the right place. The bartender here is fantastic!! Ask them to play the house song while you are there!!
Hotty Toddy to the next great dish!

On the road...

Road weary from back to back, coast to coast road trips…The Lady and I trooper on trying to get  to Savannah, GA in time for an Oyster bar party with live entertainment.  In two and a half months we’ve covered 13,500 miles, and 14 states.  We grind out the miles waiting until our stomachs roar. Road Gypsies working across the country scouring each town we stay in for their best meal.  During the last three weeks The 3 Year Old was buckled down in the back seat and I’ve learned his taste buds say if it’s not chicken nuggets it’s inedible. Brain washed at 3 as is every restaurant that has caved to the kid meal. Having just dropped him off at Grandma’s, I promise I will not eat at a restaurant in Savannah that has a kid meal.
During an excellent meal in Texas at Perrinni’s, a restaurant in Buffalo Gap that serves President Bush, The Lady and I joked while drinking a bottle of cabernet made from their vineyard that we were eating the best bread pudding and needed to tell everyone.  The secret was Jack Daniel’s Butter Sauce and if it’s one thing we like its Whiskey.  I hope to tell everyone about many great meals but right my current state of mind is at a Sonic in Arizona watching the roller skating waitresses with a Tex-Mex foot long hot dog/Frito chili boat that was awesomely washed down by a sour cherry slushy and sits on top of a bed of cheddar peppers and a better than average fast food cheese burger.  Of course The 3 Year Old had chicken nuggets and is giving us two enthusiastic thumbs up to happy to realize his face is covered in sugar fueled ketchup.  I won’t be brainwashed and I’m thinking of a bone marrow appetizer, whiskey bars, and chicken nugget free meals. Oxford, Mississippi yesterday….Savannah, Georgia tonight.
